Multidisciplinary Firearms Training
Precision Hunting & Shooting
Achieve the maximum accuracy potential of your rifle and cartridge — built specifically for hunters and sport shooters seeking ethical, one-shot performance.
LoneStar's Precision Ballistics Course gives beginning to advanced rifle shooters the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to understand external ballistics, bullet trajectories, wind effects, and the use of Applied Ballistics software — including apps and Kestrel 5700 Elite devices. The course includes two to three hours of classroom time followed by three to four hours of range time, with individual and group shooting exercises under the supervision of the instructor and range-safety personnel.
Course outline
| Section | Subject Matter |
|---|---|
| Introduction to Ballistics | Bullets, ballistic coefficients, accuracy and precision, software |
| Variables Affecting Trajectory | Gravity, drag, drag coefficients, atmosphere, altitude, velocity, distance, shooting angles |
| Calculating Trajectory | Using BCs, muzzle velocity, predictive software |
| Refining Trajectory | Truing ballistic coefficient, perfecting your ballistic predictions |
| Implementing Learnings | Range time, systematic exercise and validation of your BC |
What to bring
- The Applied Ballistics App on a phone or tablet, and/or a Kestrel 5700 Elite (which includes Applied Ballistics software)
- A minimum of 100 rounds of ammunition — preferably the ammo you'll use for hunting or target shooting; match-grade is best, and you must know the bullet manufacturer's reported G1 or G7 ballistic coefficient
- The rifle you plan to use, equipped with a scope capable of at least 14X magnification
- Eye and ear protection that does not impair use of the firearm
- Snacks and bottled water
What we provide
- Range Safety personnel
- Paper targets for 100-yard zero verification
- A spotting scope
- Steel targets at ranges from 100 to 1,000 yards (beyond 1,000 yards at the instructor's discretion, depending on demonstrated skill and weather)
All students receive a Range Safety briefing before uncasing firearms and ammunition, and all must complete the LoneStar Hunting and Shooting Partners Liability Release prior to admission to the range facilities.
