Ballistic Calculators & Apps

Turn ballistic theory into dependable, real-world hits. We teach you to calculate, refine, and true your ballistic solution using Applied Ballistics apps and the Kestrel 5700 Elite.

Ballistic calculators and apps

Our Precision Ballistics Course pairs classroom instruction with live range time so you learn the software the way you’ll actually use it. You’ll work with the Applied Ballistics App and/or a Kestrel 5700 Elite, understand the variables that affect trajectory, calculate a firing solution, and then “true” that solution against real data on steel from 100 to 1,000 yards — building a personalized DOPE card for your rifle and cartridge.

The ballistics curriculum

SectionSubject Matter
Introduction to BallisticsBullets, ballistic coefficients, accuracy and precision, software
Variables Affecting TrajectoryGravity, drag, drag coefficients, atmosphere, altitude, velocity, distance, shooting angles
Calculating TrajectoryUsing BCs, muzzle velocity, predictive software
Refining TrajectoryTruing ballistic coefficient, perfecting your ballistic predictions
Implementing LearningsRange time, systematic exercise and validation of your BC

Tools you’ll use

  • Applied Ballistics App — on phone or tablet, for solving and refining trajectories in the field.
  • Kestrel 5700 Elite — on-board weather metering plus integrated Applied Ballistics software for a complete firing solution.
  • Know your bullet manufacturer’s reported G1 or G7 ballistic coefficient before class.

Looking beyond Applied Ballistics? Our Ballistics Information / Trajectory reference lists the other trajectory apps and the books we recommend.

What to bring

  • The Applied Ballistics App on a phone or tablet, and/or a Kestrel 5700 Elite (which includes Applied Ballistics software)
  • A minimum of 100 rounds of ammunition — preferably the ammo you'll use for hunting or target shooting; match-grade is best, and you must know the bullet manufacturer's reported G1 or G7 ballistic coefficient
  • The rifle you plan to use, equipped with a scope capable of at least 14X magnification
  • Eye and ear protection that does not impair use of the firearm
  • Snacks and bottled water

All students receive a Range Safety briefing before uncasing firearms and ammunition, and all must complete the LoneStar Hunting and Shooting Partners Liability Release prior to admission to the range facilities.
